First off... What's Elementology?

Elementology is an approach to medicine based on the ancient elements of air, water, fire and earth. It is often used in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In understanding each element, we can begin to associate characteristics of these systems to physical attributes of the feet and subsequently the nature and ailments of the individual.

The four elements, earth, fire, air and water depicted in images

What are you talking about...

Truly! Read through each element below and see which ones sound you like and your feet. Usually your feet will display characteristics from a mix of elements, and this is where it gets interesting. Notice some water and fire elements? Do you tend to let things build up and create lots of pressure in your life before you ultimately snap and need to let off some steam? I thought so.

You'll tend to have a more dominant element. Have a read below and see which one you think describes you and your feet the best.

Earth

The major physical trait associated with the element of Earth is width. This refers to the wideness or breadth of the foot's structures and of the foot itself. Along with width, there is a high level of density in the bones of the feet. The bones tend to be rigid, immobile and stiff yet strong and stable.

Personal qualities:

  • Endurance and perseverance

  • Steadfastness

  • Heavy

  • Supportive

  • Dependable

  • Reliable

  • Consistent

  • Stubborn

  • Rigid

Common ailments and their meanings:

  • Hardened, calloused toenails = stagnant, overcrowded mind

  • Calloused ball of the foot = guarded emotions

  • Locked ankles = physical locking in the pelvic structure or stiffness in family/relationship dynamic

Air

The element air represents mobility and freedom. The dominant physical trait of the air element is narrow or thin feet. People with an air constitution are often constantly on the move, eating here and there and can't sit still. Another physical trait of the Air element is dryness, a universal signal of exhaustion.

Personal qualities:

  • Sporadic

  • Unpredictable

  • Lack of resources (too many can tie you down)

  • Freedom

  • Fair skin

  • Hypermobility of joints

  • Rapid metabolism

Common ailments and their meanings:

  • Narrow toes = intellectually sharp but short attention span

  • Split skin = as a result of dryness but can also signify emotional exhaustion

  • Peeling = constant peeling can signify a purge of something not easy to let go of

Fire

The most obvious trait of this element is brightness and colour, along with heat. Fire and Air are similar traits but Fire differs from Air due to its dependent nature. Fire needs a fuel source. Other characteristics of this element are foot length and athletic musculature.

Personal qualities:

  • Outgoing

  • Flamboyant

  • Confident

  • Athletic

  • Explosive

  • Tight

  • Fervent

Common ailments and their meanings:

  • Gout = stress and intense rage, so inflammatory that it cannot be supressed any longer

  • Plantar Fasciitis (PF) = lost sense of security and inability to move on

  • Popped tendons = muscular tension in the corresponding reflex area

Water

Feet most typically associated with the element of water are cold, short and pale. As a trifecta, these feet belong to people who are naturally deep, sensitive and emotionally driven.

Personal qualities:

  • Cool

  • Balanced

  • Refreshing

  • Overwhelmed

  • Anxious

  • Deep

  • Hyper-sensitive

  • Needs high level of compassion

Common ailments and their meanings:

  • Puffy balls of the feet = repressed emotions

  • Hair on the feet = sensitive, needs protection
